Frequently asked questions

What does medical history mean?

Everyone has a medical history, which is simply a record of information about a person’s health and may include a variety of information so that doctors can make sure you receive the appropriate care as well as identify issues easily, such as allergies, previous illnesses, medication, surgeries, vaccinations, as well as information about personal habits including if you smoke and drink, if you’ve been pregnant, and your family’s medical history. Find out more information about  why medical histories are important.

Who can access my medical records in the UK?

Medical records are confidential and can only be accessed with consent. They are stored on an electronic file called a Summary Care Record (SCR). By default, only yourself and those at your NHS GP practice can view your medical records.

How can I access my medical records?

With the myGP app, you can view your medical records that are stored on your GP’s computer system. If you see a “coming soon” screen, this feature is not yet supported at your practice. You’ll need your NHS credentials for this which you can obtain from your GP practice. We don’t store your medical records data. Please note that after downloading your files it is your responsibility to keep them secure and confidential.

If your GP surgery doesn’t support myGP yet, you can visit the NHS website to view your data.

Can I see my medical records online?
